The impressive record was achieved in July 2001 by an international team of drivers assembled by Japanese medical doctor and economy driving expert, Dr Miyano Shigeru.
Staying as close as possible to the coastline of Britain, the gruelling 3,738 mile route was far from the economy ideal of straight, level and uncrowded roads.
By recording such low fuel consumption while driving in real conditions the team emphasized the Lupo and Microlon’s ability to improve fuel economy.
This achievement marked an improvement of 16 per cent over the previous record for the most frugal circumnavigation of Britain which stood at just 103.01 mpg.
A VW Lupo 3L TDi achieved a fuel consumption of 2.3646 litres/100km (119.47 mpg) on a 6,017 km (3,738 mile) course around the coastline of mainland Britain, between 28 June and 5 July 2001.
